I used the government website http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/iahi0808.pdf to find the majority of my statistics for my research
By 2008 16 million households in Great Britain had Internet access which is a significant increase of over 1,000,000 homes within a year and 5,000,000 homes over the previous 5 years. This is compared to the 13.9million households between January and April 2006.
Including Northern Ireland within the statistics around 16.5million homes had Internet access. The lowest level of access in the UK was in the North East with the highest access in the South East.Fifty-six per cent of all UK households had a broadband connection in 2008, which was an increase of 51% in 2007.
The most common place for Internet access is in the home although this is changing due to the increasing number wi-fi hotspots in public places. There were around 12,000 commercial wireless hotspots across the UK in September 2006 a huge increase of 32% over twelve months.
It is shown that adults under the age of 70 with a degree were more likely to have access to the Internet in their home with around 56% of those without qualifications did not have Internet access in their homes.
One in three UK adults said they owned a mobile phone with Internet Access in February 2007 although only half had ever used it to go online.
